My Role:
UX Researcher and Interviewer
Project Timeline:
1 week
Scope:
This study aimed to gain insights into a potential new user interface. All usability tests were performed and documented using a prototype of InovCares. After multiple rounds of user testing, these are essential findings and conclusions drawn from my research.
Each participant was given similar tasks, and each person was placed in a relatively similar scenario.
This report outlines my methods and approaches to developing a solution after synthesizing my data.
Research and Findings in Usability Testing:
During the study, I looked into a few existing features, such as appointment scheduling, rewards, and user data, such as health records and other personal information. Research is the fundamental building block of UI and UX. Interviews, tests, questions, and surveys help us draw insightful conclusions quickly and effectively.
With less than one week to schedule, plan, test, execute, and synthesize data in addition to other tasks, I sought the help of 5 anonymous contributors for informal video-moderated testing. I also obtained notable participants from usertesting.com who participated in a similar unmoderated test. Usability trials tested an existing prototype of InovCares using a URL link.
Each of the 11 participants tested was given similar tasks and placed within similar scenarios. Of these tests, eight were successful, and three remained labeled as inconclusive. All successful tests were recorded and transcribed.
Testing:
1. what are your initial impressions of the website without leaving the homepage? Could you explain your answer?
2. While thinking aloud: You must make an appointment with a new doctor. How would you go about doing that? You can click to accomplish the task. Take up to 3 minutes to complete this task.
3. While thinking aloud: You want to view personal health records such as test results. Where might you find them? Take up to 3 minutes to complete this task.
4. Please go to page 26. While thinking aloud, what do you think this page is trying to get you to do?
You can change pages using the arrows in the XD URL link underneath the pictures of the application screen.
Once on the page, navigate a few features and communicate what is happening. Remember, you are still curious about rewards and your past weight.
5. Now go to page 31 and try and navigate a few of the features and communicate what is going on.
6. Were you able to find any of your information, such as past weight and health records?
7. From this screen, try to navigate to the rewards feature you initially wanted to find.
8. Did you find the rewards feature? Yes or no.
9. What did you think about the rewards feature? If you did not find it, please skip to page 40, and please comment.
10. Does this application empower you to want to achieve health goals through sustainable lifestyle changes? Yes, No, and Maybe.
InovCares new UI link:
The link is used for testing all participants.
Findings:
The rewards feature does empower people to achieve their health goals through sustainable lifestyle changes. All tried users felt having something of monetary value as an incentive could be an effective way to monitor their health. The overall user interface of InovCares seems intuitive, but the application would benefit from a more minimalist design.
All the application features seem equally important to users; however, they all appeared overwhelmed with content. The application’s primary function as a tool to communicate with healthcare professionals and overall document wellness, fitness, and health status appears to be valued by users.
Medication reminders, personal achievements, health records, team goals, and communication are equal to and not of greater importance than any other feature. Other user frustrations included the flow and navigation of the application and spelling errors, text size, and improper uses of medical terms — a worrying find.
Personas:
Possible users for this application would be people ages 28–40.
Creating monetized incentives, rewards, or deals as user rewards would be critical in keeping users satisfied.
Two personas were created, Nancy and Drew, both unique. The differences between the two profiles may help to identify the types of potential users.
Next Steps and Recommendations:
This study has determined that the InovCares application can empower people to achieve their health goals through sustainable lifestyle changes. After testing, I have concluded that this application can enable users to do so: all users tested claim to have found the application useful. This study determined that users are interested in applying, such as InovCares, but further development is required.
The primary frustrations were with the flow and navigation of the application. Besides, many simple things, such as spelling and inaccurate language, were also troubling. According to my research users, this application would be people ages 28–40. they would all be smartphone users and be work-oriented. From what I could infer from my data, all my participants were relatively educated and could accomplish all the tasks I gave them.
I would strongly recommend that you expand on the findings listed above. My research confirms that this application has much potential. A more advanced prototype would effectively lock down the user interface flow and test the rewards feature. Furthermore, creating monetizable incentives, rewards, or deals for users to be awarded would be critical in keeping users satisfied.
A few users suggested that even applying achievements, gifts like toothbrushes, and gift cards to outdoor fitness entities could be used as incentives if working with insurance proves complicated. Further research and development in this product appear tangible, and I highly recommend advanced research into this product.
An advanced prototype would be useful in locking down the user interface flow. This would also allow for more advanced testing of the rewards feature, which has potential business opportunities and helps strengthen the InovCares mission statement. Lastly, steps need to be implemented to address accessibility and compliance of the site and content.
